Billie Eilish came to fix pop music (We didn't know it was broken)
I haven't loved an album this much since SZA's "SOS" or Lorde's "Melodrama"
Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT made me feel a way I haven’t felt about an album in a while. I don’t mean to say I haven’t liked any recent albums, but this one surprised me. I wasn’t expecting it to be that good.
Maybe I just haven’t been too engaged with pop music. I’m huge on the folk-country wave we’re experiencing right now, as many of you know. As much as I am a big Billie Eilish fan, I was so caught up in all the new releases—I wrote last week about the intense volume of new music we’ve been getting—that I didn’t pay too close attention to the rollout of this album.
I would bestow onto HIT ME HARD AND SOFT the highest honor I could grant an album, coming from me: It reminded me of Melodrama. Short, powerful, with painfully real lyrics and meticulous production.
This album made me think: Why is no one doing it like this anymore?
I enjoyed reading a lot of the commentary about the length of the album, only 10 songs. Not to shade Taylor and her double album, but more songs equals more money for artists, and it’s clear to me when an artist prioritizes quantity over quality.

I’m very particular about albums. I love short albums, but I also love when the placement of the songs on the album feels intentional. Albums should be listened to straight through, I believe. So you can imagine how happy I was when “SKINNY” bled right into “LUNCH.” The melancholy start to the album with “SKINNY” was an interesting choice, which made it perfect. It grabbed my attention. It’s this mix of sad and upbeat tracks on the album which also reminds me of Melodrama. But enough comparisons: This album deserves accolades on its own.

I’m a sucker for a Spotify data organizer. This one arranges your top artists based on popularity to demonstrate how obscure your taste is.

Bleachers just released their first deluxe album ever. Here’s my review of the Bleachers self-titled album released in March.
