A little while ago, I wrote about disappearing genres, and how Gen Z specifically doesn't care as much about genre when it comes to curating playlists or music festivals. While all this is true, having some sort of label can be useful in finding a certain type of music. But do we really need so many?
I’m still discovering genres I’ve never heard about, especially if I’m playing around with a Spotify AI program, like the Spotify pie, I’ll come across one I’ve never heard of. Like, what is Sheffield indie or pov: indie and what makes them different than just indie? (Stick around til the end to find the answer).
Apparently, Spotify recognizes at least 1383 genres, according to this list from GitHub. I highly recommend taking a look because it’s quite entertaining.

Most of my playlists are multi-genre, but some of the more popular ones have a more narrow focus. “Unhinged beer uncle,” for example, is mostly yacht rock. I know this, because I received many comments on TikTok saying “this is just yacht rock.” I don’t fully understand what compels someone to demonstrate their knowledge of niche sub-genres, but even if they are right, is “unhinged beer uncle music” not so much more fun?
Speaking of, here’s some playlists I made this week:
Running this back
When I shared this playlist last week it didn’t have the over 30K likes it does now! So I thought it was worth sharing again. Country and yacht rock - Miley Cyrus, Sheryl Crow, Dolly Parton, Jo Dee Messina, ABBA, Edison Lighthouse, Maren Morris, Elle King, Shania Twain, Emily Zeck, Jimmy Buffett, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Beach Boys, Eagles
Do you really wanna know?
Based on the Taylor Swift song - Crimes of passion - songs with this mysterious vibe, darkish undertones, secrecy - Taylor Swift, Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Phoebe Bridgers
For Mental Health Awareness Month
In honor of mental health awareness month - my favorite songs that got me through tough times - Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Taylor Swift, First Aid Kit, Noah Kahan, Florence + The Machine, My Chemical Romance, Vance Joy, All Time Low, Bleachers, Sleeping at Last, Khalid
When the world didn’t end
Zedd, Foxes, Taylor Swift, fun., The Lumineers, Neon Trees, Phillip Phillips, One Direction, The Wanted, Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, P!nk, Rihanna
So, apparently Sheffield Indie is a genre that originated in Sheffield, England. So like midwestern emo, but with indie rock. Arctic Monkeys falls under this umbrella, so that checks out why they made my pie. Pov: indie, on the other hand, is indie characterized by a DIY approach to production and promotion. Apparently The Neighbourhood and Mac DeMarco fall under this genre.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
